Faro
Faro is the main City of the Algarve. Here there are many places of interest, plus modern shopping centres.
Fishing Villages.
Nearby is the traditional fishing village of Fuzeta.
Spain.
It is only a 30 minute drive to the Spanish border where you will find the town of Ayamonte in Andalucia. Seville is a two hour car trip away but well worth a visit.
Monte Gordo.
If you like gambling or a good meal with an international cabaret show, then visit the Casino complex at Monte Gordo. It is only a short trip by car, and the beaches are fabulous.

The so called Roman ridge spans the River Gilão which runs through the centre of Tavira. Following an inspection during recent works, the bridge was found to be of Medieval construction.

The bandstand, stage and garden created in the 19th century was constructed in Porto by Fundagão D Ouro (The Gold Foundry). It was shipped to Olhão in 1890 and then on to Tavira.
The Barracks, a building with Pombaline traces, was mostly constructed in 1795, but work was halted after the repossession in 1856, and was only completed in the 20th Century.
Mansions in the Rua de Liberdade. (The Liberty Street). There are houses here with palace like appearances dating from the 18th Century, with four sided roofs, wrought iron verandas and stone embossed windows. The window parapets are outstanding and constitute some of the Algarve´s best examples of baroque window decorations. On the West Bank of the River Gilão, buildings from the 18th century, in the same style, can also be found.

Tavira has been an established fishing town for many years and fresh fish of the day can be purchased in the New Market area, which also incorporates many fruit, vegetable, and fresh meat stalls.
The old fish market in the centre of Tavira now houses shops, restaurants and cafes, plus from time to time through the summer months, various exhibitions.
Branching out from the old market are many small cobbled roads and alley ways where you can walk and view the small shops or rest by the river or main square in one of the many friendly, good quality cafes and watch the world go by.

Or maybe you would like to catch the town’s road train or horse and carriage and travel the local streets the easy way, and see many of the sights at very reasonable prices.

All in all, Tavira is a lovely town with mixtures of the old and new, with friendly and helpful people, to help you relax and chill out.
